There was a good turnout of ladies.The documentaries were very well received. Many People of the group did not speak English so Swathi (Volunteer of ROKO Cancer from medical field) translated the breast awareness presentation into Hindi.One member of the group has undergone treatment for breast cancer and talked to the group about her experience.She urged them all to be breast aware and not be complacent.She told them that although she led a very healthy lifestyle and had a healthy diet she still got breast cancer so it was still important to check your breasts because breast cancer can happen to anyone.

British Asian women's conference

Awareness on breast cancer was done at the British Asian women's conference on 2nd of July 2008 at East London University by showing the documentaries and distributing self-examining leaflets.

Cyana Cancer

The presentation focused on continuing to be breast aware as many of the attendees had breast cancer or had breast cancer in the past and they had come along with family and careers.They appreciated the documentaries and in particular ‘Remember Me’ which featured breast cancer survivors and a positive message that being a women,a mother and a wife is to be special and that you should look after yourself as the whole family is affected if you neglect yourself and do not be aware of your Health.

Central GurudwaraThe programme was more family oriented.The response was very positive-two of the attendees would have liked to have breast self-examination on the premises although it was re-iterated that they should visit the doctors if they were at all worried about the breast examination.The message of the importance of early detection of breast cancer and importance of being breast aware was noted by all the attendees.

The Breast Awareness Programme was at Hindu Mandir in Gants Hill.The group of ladies were older (60plus) and found the programme useful,although the time limit of 30 minutes was very short and many of the ladies needed help filling out the evaluation forms which were in English.

Outcome: To print the evaluation forms in all the different community languages and to have an assistant/volunteer to assist the ladies.

Others LIKE cyna, saheli etc ( Under reaching to the Hard to reach comunities.)

Many other seminars have been arranged to bring awareness of importance ofEarly detection has been emphasized thrpough the medium of audovisual aids and showing of audience friendly documentaries in their own languages. The presentations have been conducted in their own languages. 

The Breast Awareness Programme was at the West Hampstead Women’s centre.Many of the attendees said that they had learnt the importance of being breast aware. A few said they now realized the implications of early detection.

Feedback from the evaluation forms suggests that the documentaries are very effective in getting the messages across of the importance of being aware and early detection of high survival rate.

The event is also serving as a reminder to the older attendees of the importance of going for their mammography when invited by the doctor.

On 27th, 28th and 29th of June Roko cancer participated in India Investment property show at NEC, Birmingham, as the charity is the official charity for the event. Showing of documentaries on importance of early detection and awareness of this disease along with distributing the leaflets to the visitors of the show created the awareness of breast cancer.

On 17th August'07 ,the leaflets about breast self-examination were distributed.The documentaries from bollywood stars and breast cancer survivors were also shown for the importance of early detection of breast cancer.

A Breast Cancer awareness programme was held at Nehru Centre, London on 29th Nov 06 with the support of Indian Welfare Society. Documentaries titled “REMEMBER ME” and “BE BREAST AWARE” were screened and Breast Self Examination (BSE) leaflets were distributed.

Half day conference on Breast Cancer Awareness was conducted on 24th Nov06 for the Asian community in Wembley with the support of Lottery Fund (Awards for All). Speeches on Breast Cancer Awareness were given by specialists, documentaries on Breast Cancer Awareness were screened, pamphlets in Gujarati, Bengali, Hindi, Punjabi, English were distributed and interactive workshop was held with the participants. Mr Dawn Butler, MP was present to endorse our Camp and appreciated our work.

Breast Cancer Awareness Programme was conducted in Leicester on 16th Nov 06,in association with Coping with Cancer charity where documentaries were screened on Breast Cancer Awareness to the South Asian communities and BSE pamphlets were distributed in different ethnic languages.

MKC Trust organized an awareness programme at the NRI institute program at Portman Hotel, London on 9th Nov 06.

Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign for early detection and cure amongst diverse communities was held at Merstham Tandoori, Surrey on 27th Sep 06.

Breast Cancer awareness campaign held at the Rumi’s, Chelsea on 27th July 06,where Gujarati community of UK, spearheaded by Priya Kalidas of Bombay Dreams fame generated funds for Mobile Breast Cancer Unit to be launched in Gujarat in the future.

Breast Cancer Awareness Programme was held on 21st July 06 at Kanchans Banqueting Suite, Gants Hill with the support of Mr SS Baxi,owner of Kanchans,; where Mr. Stephen Timms, Rt. Honourable Minister for Treasury was the chief guest. The event was graced by other dignitaries like Baroness Sandeep Verma, Nikki Aneja Walia, Juliette Foster etc.

At the Diversity Award at London on 24th Nov 05, noted Bollywood Actress Aishwarya Rai picked-up the winner of the lucky draw and declared that the funds raised would be donated to Roko Cancer for helping victims in India.

As part of the Awareness Campaign various Presentations,Seminars,Events etc are also being held at various places in UK.

ACTIVITIES IN PAKISTAN

On 5th Oct 07, Roko Cancer Campaign flagged off its Unit on  journey to Pakistan from Gurdwara Rakabganj, New Delhi amidst a mass gathering of people and Media persons. The Unit was flagged off by Mr. Mukthar Hussain Tirmizi, Counsellor, Pakistan High Commission and Mr. APS Chawla, Chairman MKC Trust, UK. This moment will perhaps be etched in the history of India and Pakistan when the man made boundaries seem to erode in the spirit of humanness. For the first time these two countries wage a common battle on a common platform-a fight against Breast Cancer Globally. The Unit will be in Pakistan for a period of tthree months. Breast Cancer Awareness and Detection camps were held at various places in Pakistan.

OTHER COUNTRIES

We are venturing into other countries also.The unit will travel to other South Asian countries in the near future.
